Aviation News – Boeing has secured a full-rate production contract to build the first four MH-139A Grey Wolf helicopters for the U.S. Air Force, following the program’s official declaration of initial operating capability earlier this year. The milestone marks a major step forward in replacing the aging fleet dedicated to safeguarding critical domestic military installations.

The recent award expands the ongoing modernization effort aimed at replacing the legacy UH-1N Huey fleet, which has provided security for decades. The contract brings the total number of MH-139A aircraft under contract to 42, with 27 helicopters already delivered to date. This transition equips units assigned to nuclear deterrence and transport missions with significantly updated operational capabilities.

Based on the commercial Leonardo AW139 platform, the dual-engine vertical lift platform offers substantial improvements over its predecessor. Boeing serves as the prime contractor, integrating military-specific avionics, defensive systems, and armor onto the multi-mission platform.

The upgraded airframe provides double the range, 50 percent greater speed, and a significantly larger payload capacity compared to legacy assets. These improvements enable crews to respond faster across vast geographic areas while patrolling critical intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) silos scattered across remote regions.
