Aviation News – Airbus and partner Kratos Defense & Security Solutions have successfully conducted the maiden European flight of the U740 Valkyrie uncrewed combat aircraft, marking a crucial step toward deploying autonomous fighter wingmen by 2029.

The initial test flight took place at a designated facility in Northern Europe following extensive joint development between Airbus and Kratos Defense. Defense officials selected the uncrewed Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA) initiative to strengthen air defense capabilities across Europe and meet the urgent operational mandates of the German Armed Forces.

Engineers achieved all primary objectives during the debut demonstration, validating the flight performance and system integration of the high-speed uncrewed platform. The success keeps the defense coalition on schedule to deliver combat-ready units to European allied air forces within the decade.

The flight showcased a runway-independent, rocket-assisted takeoff followed by dynamic maneuvers across varying altitudes at speeds reaching Mach 0.8. Operators also executed real-time in-flight mission adjustments, setting the stage for forthcoming trials involving Airbus’s proprietary MARS autonomous mission system.

”This milestone confirms that our collaboration is on track to deliver critical autonomous air combat capabilities to European defense forces,” defense representatives emphasized, highlighting the strategic importance of rapid deployment in modern airspace scenarios.

The trial marks a major leap forward in integrating autonomous fighter escorts alongside manned platforms to protect frontline pilots. As flight testing accelerates, defense analysts expect these uncrewed systems to form the backbone of next-generation European air defense strategies.
