Aviation News – The Exploration Company has secured a landmark $450 million investment round to accelerate the development of its reusable space transportation systems. Led by founder Hélène Huby, the historic fundraising effort represents the largest investment round ever achieved by a European space firm and sets a record for a female-led European company.
The five-year-old aerospace enterprise closed the historic financing round at a pivotal moment for European space policy. Founder and CEO Hélène Huby, a former executive at Airbus and ArianeGroup, featured prominently as a key envoy during a major space summit hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron. The funding comes as traditional European space programs face significant competitive pressures. Key flagships currently struggle with operational constraints: the non-reusable Ariane 6 rocket carries high launch costs and a limited cadence of roughly ten flights per year, while the IRIS² satellite constellation faces multi-year delays and expanding budgets.
To overcome these institutional bottlenecks, The Exploration Company is developing its proprietary Nyx spacecraft capsule. Designed as a modular, reusable orbital vehicle, Nyx aims to deliver cargo to the International Space Station (ISS) by November 2028 as its primary near-term milestone. Beyond cargo logistics, Huby and her engineering team are laying the groundwork for future crewed spaceflight missions. In parallel, the company is developing the Storm methane engine, a high-thrust propulsion system designed to power a fully reusable European heavy-lift rocket capable of placing 40 tons of payload into orbit by 2033.
The underlying technology relies on advanced reusable propulsion architecture designed to lower access costs to low-Earth orbit. Storm utilizes a high-efficiency methane combustion system to allow rapid engine turnaround and repeated flights. A primary hot-fire test of the Storm engine is scheduled for late 2028. Operationally, deploying reusable spacecraft and launcher platforms provides Europe with sovereign, scalable logistics capacity, freeing regional space operations from dependence on non-reusable platforms or external foreign vendors.
“This financing will allow us to execute with urgency: to bring Nyx to the International Space Station and safely back to Earth, while accelerating Storm, the high-thrust propulsion capability Europe needs for its future reusable heavy launcher,” stated Hélène Huby, founder and CEO of The Exploration Company.
The record-breaking funding injection positions The Exploration Company as a central player in Europe’s orbital autonomy. By combining commercial spacecraft operations with reusable heavy-lift propulsion development, the company creates a scalable foundation for future sovereign space operations. Successful execution of these programs will redefine European space access over the next decade.
The successful funding round provides The Exploration Company with the financial resources to execute its ambitious hardware roadmap over the coming decade. By prioritizing reusable architectures like the Nyx capsule and Storm engine, the company addresses critical structural gaps in current European space logistics. Initial engine testing in 2028 will serve as a decisive indicator of Europe’s ability to maintain independent, cost-effective space transport in an increasingly competitive global market.
