AviationNews – Philippine Airlines (PAL) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Airbus for nine additional A350-1000 aircraft, alongside purchase rights for five more, to power its ambitious international expansion. Announced at the Farnborough International Airshow, the agreement doubles the flag carrier’s potential fleet of Airbus’s flagship widebody to 18 aircraft as it reinforces non-stop connections between Manila and major intercontinental destinations.
The strategic deal was inked by PAL Holdings President and Chief Operating Officer Lucio C. Tan III, PAL President Richard Nuttall, and senior Airbus executives. PAL originally ordered nine A350-1000s in 2023, taking delivery of the first two earlier this year to operate ultra-long-haul routes such as Manila to New York and Toronto. With the remaining seven units from the initial order scheduled to arrive by 2028, deliveries for this new second batch are slated between 2034 and 2036, supporting PAL’s long-term fleet modernization strategy across North America and Europe.
Engineered for extended range and fuel efficiency, the Airbus A350-1000 delivers up to a 25% reduction in fuel burn and carbon emissions compared to previous-generation aircraft. PAL configures its A350-1000 fleet in a premium three-class layout accommodating 382 passengers, featuring 42 Business Class suites equipped with sliding privacy doors, 24 Premium Economy seats, and 316 Economy Class seats. The advanced aerodynamic design and twin-engine efficiency enable the airline to operate some of the world’s longest commercial non-stop sectors while maximizing passenger comfort and operational economics.

By securing these state-of-the-art widebodies, Philippine Airlines positions itself to capture rising transpacific and intercontinental travel demand well into the next decade. The growth path provides PAL with operational flexibility and increased seat capacity on premium direct routes, offering travelers enhanced seamless travel options to key world destinations.
This expansion agreement solidifies the partnership between the Philippine flag carrier and the European planemaker. With deliveries spanning through 2036, PAL ensures that its long-haul operations remain powered by modern, fuel-efficient aircraft.
