The iconic De Havilland DH 88 Comet (G-ACSS), known as “Grosvenor House,” suffered a severe landing incident today after executing a nose-over maneuver, though all spectators on the airfield were confirmed safe. Emergency responders rushed to the scene following the sudden runway excursion, while officials evaluate the pilot’s condition.
The legendary twin-engine racer initially aborted its touchdown following a significant bounce, executing a prompt go-around to clear the runway. During the second attempt, the aircraft experienced a minor bounce before drifting off the strip, triggering a series of violent porpoising motions that ultimately pitched the nose forward into the ground.

The structural impact sheared off the airframe’s tail assembly, which experts note likely absorbed a significant portion of the kinetic energy to protect the main cabin. The De Havilland Comet carries a historical reputation among aviators for its narrow flight tolerances and notoriously difficult handling characteristics during final approach and roll-out.
