Elroy Air Demonstrates Automated Cargo Deliveries for US Army Using Chaparral Autonomous VTOL Drone

AviationNews – Elroy Air has successfully demonstrated three new unattended delivery modes for its Chaparral autonomous hybrid-electric VTOL aircraft during flight testing for the U.S. Army. The milestone shows how heavy-cargo drones can supply troops in contested environments without requiring landing infrastructure or ground personnel.

Developed under contract with the U.S. Army, the new capability addresses critical logistics challenges in communication-denied and high-threat military operational areas. During flight demonstrations at Elroy Air’s test facility in Byron, California, the Chaparral drone completed two distinct payload releases during a single flight. The aircraft executed a precision airdrop of a 68-pound load while holding a close-in hover, followed by a 70-pound payload release while cruising at 65 feet in forward flight. In a separate test run, the aircraft demonstrated a third mode by landing, autonomously releasing its modular cargo pod on the ground, and preparing for departure without human assistance at the landing zone.

The Chaparral platform uses a hybrid-electric powertrain combining eight vertical lift rotors with four forward-flight propellers, allowing vertical takeoffs and landings alongside an operational range of up to 450 miles. Capable of carrying more than 500 pounds of cargo in detachable pods, the aircraft executes missions using pre-programmed software coordinates. This pre-programmed delivery capability enables fully autonomous resupply runs even when electronic warfare or satellite jamming prevents active operator controls or remote pilot commands.

Highlighting the operational necessity of autonomous cargo delivery, Elroy Air Chief Executive Officer Dave Merrill emphasized: “Our Chaparral technology represents a step forward in the realm of challenging logistics, and will enable rapid, safe and reliable deployment of essential supplies to any corner of the globe.”

The U.S. Army plans to integrate the Chaparral into upcoming military readiness exercises to evaluate tactical resupply scenarios under field conditions. To support full-scale production requirements, Elroy Air has partnered with Kratos Defense & Security Solutions to manufacture the autonomous aircraft at its facility in Sacramento, California. Beyond defense logistics, these unattended aerial delivery modes will also enhance civilian disaster response and express middle-mile commercial freight delivery in remote regions.

Elroy Air’s successful demonstration confirms the viability of autonomous heavy-cargo drones in high-risk operational environments. By removing operators and ground crews from the delivery loop, the Chaparral platform minimizes risk to personnel while expanding logistics reach. As field evaluations progress, automated aerial resupply is poised to become a vital asset for both military and commercial aviation logistics.
