Project Able Baker Converts Retired Oil Rigs into Rocket Landing Platforms

Aviation News – The U.S. Air Force has launched Project Able Baker, an initiative to convert retired offshore oil platforms into landing sites for reusable heavy rocket boosters. The project aims to expand launch and recovery capacity for the U.S. Space Force and commercial space companies while reducing costs and environmental impact.

 

The initiative comes as traditional launch facilities such as Vandenberg Space Force Base and Cape Canaveral face increasing congestion due to growing demand for space launches. By repurposing decommissioned offshore drilling platforms, the Air Force hopes to avoid costly demolition work while preserving valuable marine ecosystems. The concept also supports the rising operational needs of both military and commercial launch providers.

 

Under Project Able Baker, reusable rocket boosters operated by organizations including SpaceX, Blue Origin, and United Launch Alliance would return to fixed offshore platforms after launch missions. The approach creates a distributed network of recovery sites, allowing more frequent launches and reducing pressure on existing spaceports as demand for orbital missions continues to increase.

 

Using permanent offshore infrastructure instead of specialized drone ships offers important operational advantages. Fixed landing platforms can lower recovery costs, improve logistics, and simplify maintenance operations. The new network is also expected to reduce the effects of sonic booms on coastal communities while minimizing disruptions to busy maritime shipping routes.

 

“Project Able Baker represents an innovative approach to expanding national launch infrastructure by leveraging existing offshore assets while supporting both defense and commercial space operations,” the U.S. Air Force said, highlighting the program’s strategic and environmental benefits.
