Aviation News – Defense technology leader Lockheed Martin has launched MORFIUS X-Rotor, an innovative airborne counter-drone system designed to eliminate massed unmanned aerial threats. Unveiled at the Farnborough International Airshow, this reusable High Power Microwave weapon can defeat dozens of hostile targets in a single engagement to protect frontline forces.
Commercial unmanned aerial systems have rapidly evolved into one of the most perilous tactical threats to allied forces across modern combat zones. Traditional air defenses often rely on expensive interceptor missiles, creating a severe cost imbalance when facing cheap, mass-produced drone swarms. To bridge this critical defense gap, Lockheed Martin engineered the MORFIUS X-Rotor as an adaptable, reusable airborne effector capable of neutralizing hostile platforms while drastically slashing engagement costs.
Building on flight-tested microwave architecture developed since 2017, the MORFIUS X-Rotor directly supports the U.S. Department of War’s counter-UAS strategy. Following extensive flight trials in Arizona, California, and Oklahoma, defense engineers demonstrated the platform’s intercept precision and lethal pulse capabilities. Crucially, the system remains sensor- and command-agnostic, enabling seamless integration with existing battlefield radar and command and control networks without requiring dedicated fire-control infrastructure.
Unlike conventional single-use missiles, the ground-launched MORFIUS X-Rotor flies directly into target areas to emit pulses of High Power Microwave (HPM) energy that fry sensitive electronics inside enemy aircraft. A single flight can disable more than 50 hostile drones simultaneously while minimizing collateral damage to surrounding civilian infrastructure. Once its mission concludes, operators recover the aircraft from the field for rapid servicing and reuse, achieving an unprecedented low cost per kill during high-intensity engagements.
