China Southern Cargo Expands Fleet With AerCap Boeing 777 Freighter Leases And New Boeing Orders

Aviation News – China Southern Cargo has secured a major fleet expansion by signing a lease agreement with AerCap for three IAI-converted Boeing B777-300ERSF aircraft to boost its international logistics capabilities. The agreement marks a significant step for the carrier as it aggressively scales up its long-haul freight capacity to meet growing global e-commerce demand.

Under the terms of the newly finalized deal, the lessor AerCap will deliver the first converted freighter in October 2027. The remaining two widebody aircraft are scheduled to join the airline’s operational fleet over the course of 2028. This strategic timeline ensures a steady influx of high-capacity cargo lift over the next few years.

This lease agreement follows closely on the heels of another massive commitment to the Boeing 777 platform. Late last month, China Southern Cargo solidified its growth strategy by placing a direct order with Boeing for two B777Fs and five next-generation B777-8Fs, alongside options for an additional three B777-8Fs.

The Boeing B777-300ERSF, often dubbed the “Big Twin,” offers significant operational efficiency by burning less fuel and emitting lower emissions per tonne compared to older four-engine freighters. Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) handles the passenger-to-freighter conversion, maximizing volumetric capacity and structurally altering the main deck to accommodate massive cargo payloads across global trade lanes.

“This partnership with AerCap allows us to rapidly expand our modern widebody fleet with highly efficient aircraft,” an airline representative stated regarding the expansion. “Investing in both converted and factory-built freighters ensures we maintain a competitive edge in delivering reliable logistics services worldwide.”

The dual approach of leasing converted planes while ordering brand-new factory freighters establishes a robust baseline for the airline’s future network development. Industry analysts expect this multi-layered fleet strategy to significantly increase cargo throughput between major manufacturing hubs in Asia and consumer markets in Europe and North America.

The multi-billion-dollar fleet renewal program positions the Chinese carrier as a dominant player in international air logistics. By aligning with industry leaders like AerCap and Boeing, the airline secures long-term capacity stability and technological superiority. These investments ensure the carrier remains fully prepared to handle evolving global supply chain demands for the next decade.
