The defense manufacturer unveiled a full-scale mock-up of the medium-lift unmanned aerial system (UAS) on June 8, 2026, marking Airbus’s second major foray into converting crewed helicopters into autonomous platforms. Based on an exceptionally mature airframe family that has logged over 8.5 million flight hours across 1,800 active aircraft, the U145 transitions the legacy Eurocopter design into a pilotless system. Airbus expects the newly engineered platform to complete its maiden flight with a temporary safety pilot on board by the end of 2026, targeting full operational entry into service for international customers by the early 2030s.

Operationally, the U145 completely removes the traditional physical cockpit, liberating significant internal volume to maximize high-capacity freight transport. The structural transformation introduces an integrated nose cargo door equipped with a foldable loading table and a dedicated heavy-duty cargo floor. Driven by twin Safran Arriel 2E engines and fully managed by an artificial intelligence flight control matrix, the drone achieves a maximum takeoff weight of 3,800 kilograms while utilizing specialized sensor suites to independently navigate contested airspaces or severe weather zones.

During the product launch event, Airbus Helicopters Chief Executive Officer Matthieu Louvot emphasized the operational advantages of the platform, stating: “With the U145, we are offering our customers an autonomous, uncrewed version of our H145 helicopter—combining the proven airframe, power and useful load of the H145 with the autonomy of a UAS.” He added that partnering with European technology leaders will continue expanding the autonomous mission ecosystem across allied countries.
