Japan Airlines Begins Pioneering Airport Trial Using Biodiesel Sourced From Rice Bran Byproducts

Aviation News – Japan Airlines has launched a ground-support demonstration project at Yamagata Airport utilizing an innovative biodiesel fuel derived entirely from rice bran oil byproducts. The eco-friendly renewable fuel currently powers a specialized cargo and baggage towing tractor, marking a crucial step forward in the carrier’s broader strategy to decarbonize its regional ground operations.

The year-long sustainability initiative officially commenced operations on May 28, 2026, and is scheduled to run continuously until late May 2027. This collaborative venture unites major commercial, industrial, and academic entities to validate a domestic supply chain for green energy. Boso oil and fat, a specialized manufacturing subsidiary operating under the Showa Sangyo Group, handles the fuel production by upcycling raw agricultural waste materials that are otherwise unsuitable for human consumption.

The project utilizes non-edible rice bran fatty acid, a structural byproduct left over after standard agricultural facilities finish manufacturing commercial rice bran oil. Project organizers selected the Yamagata facility specifically because the regional geography creates extreme seasonal temperature swings, providing an ideal baseline to evaluate how the fuel holds up under harsh, real-world weather fluctuations. Additionally, the location provides immediate logistical access to the technical researchers who pioneered the fuel’s core chemical composition.

The processing plant synthesizes the raw agricultural waste into functional fuel using an advanced chemical engineering technique called the Ion Exchange Resin Method, which researchers originally developed at Tohoku University. This specific trial marks the first time in global aviation history that an airport has deployed biodiesel manufactured via this exact separation process. By integrating this advanced technology into daily ground operations, the carrier can substantially lower localized greenhouse emissions without modifying its existing fleet of heavy utility vehicles.

“Currently, Japan Airlines is using biodiesel fuel at 23 airports nationwide, and we have adopted this specific biodiesel fuel initiative because it results in zero net carbon emissions,” stated an airline operations manager during the launch ceremony.

The successful rollout of this rice-derived biofuel could establish a replicable blueprint for regional airports aiming to achieve net-zero carbon infrastructure targets. Energy analysts anticipate that validating this localized production method will reduce industry reliance on traditional imported petroleum and imported biofuel feedstocks.

The data compiled over the next twelve months will directly influence how rapidly the airline can expand alternative energy adoption across its domestic ground handling networks. Engineers plan to closely monitor engine wear, fuel line filters, and daily torque output to ensure the upcycled mixture meets strict industrial performance standards. Ultimately, this trial proves that local agricultural waste can play a pivotal role in securing a cleaner future for global aviation hubs.
