Aviation News – VietJetAir has officially signed a lease agreement with SPDB Financial Leasing for up to ten COMAC C909 regional jets to support its aggressive international growth. This strategic move marks a significant step in the airline’s fleet diversification as it strengthens its presence in the Southeast Asian and Chinese markets.

The selection of the C909, formerly known as the ARJ21, comes as VietJetAir prepares for a major network expansion into mainland China. By partnering with the Shanghai-based SPDB Financial Leasing, the Vietnamese low-cost carrier secures the capacity needed to bridge regional hubs. While the formal signing has been confirmed, both parties have yet to disclose a specific delivery timeline for the aircraft.

This deal is a central pillar of VietJetAir’s strategy to capture rising travel demand between Vietnam and China. The airline plans to leverage these new assets to launch five new destinations originating from its primary bases in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. This expansion follows a broader trend of increased bilateral trade and tourism within the region.

The COMAC C909 is designed specifically for short-to-medium haul regional routes, offering high performance in hot and high-altitude conditions. Its operational efficiency allows carriers like VietJetAir to maintain low costs while servicing secondary airports that cannot accommodate larger narrow-body aircraft. This technical flexibility is expected to improve route frequency and profitability on newly established corridors.
