Aviation News – United States Navy has awarded Castelion a $105 million contract to prepare the Blackbeard hypersonic missile for deployment on carrier-based Boeing F/A-18E/F Super Hornet aircraft, marking a significant step toward operational use as early as next year.

The contract highlights growing urgency within the Pentagon to expand advanced strike capabilities amid rising tensions involving China and potential scenarios around Taiwan. Castelion, a California-based startup, was selected to accelerate development with a focus on affordability and rapid production. The Navy plans to procure up to 4,500 air-launched hypersonic missiles over the next five years, underscoring the scale of its modernization effort.

The Blackbeard hypersonic missile is designed to be launched from carrier-based fighter jets, giving it a distinct operational advantage over land-based systems. By deploying from an aircraft carrier, the missile can reach targets such as enemy missile installations and naval vessels that would otherwise remain out of range. Its hypersonic speed enhances survivability against air defenses while enabling rapid, precision strikes in contested environments.

Sean Pitt, Chief Operating Officer of Castelion, emphasized the program’s significance, stating that the company is focused on delivering a cost-effective and rapidly deployable hypersonic capability to meet urgent operational needs.

Looking ahead, the integration of the Blackbeard hypersonic missile into carrier air wings could reshape naval warfare by extending the reach and flexibility of U.S. strike operations. The program also signals a broader shift toward scalable, high-speed weapons designed for modern conflict scenarios.
