Aviation News – The 34th Fighter Squadron, known as the “Rude Rams,” has been honored with the prestigious 2025 Raytheon Award as the top fighter squadron in the United States Air Force. This recognition follows a year of unprecedented high-tempo operations and historic combat achievements for the 388th Fighter Wing unit.
Based at Hill Air Force Base, the squadron maintained a relentless operational pace, remaining deployed for 11 out of 12 months. During this period, the unit logged thousands of combat hours across the Middle East, playing a pivotal role in two major CENTCOM missions: Operation Rough Rider and Operation Midnight Hammer.
The selection for this elite award highlights the squadron’s impact on regional security, specifically its efforts to dismantle Houthi terrorist capabilities in Yemen. The “Rude Rams” executed precision strikes against critical infrastructure, including air defense systems, command-and-control facilities, and advanced ballistic missile storage sites, significantly degrading the adversary’s reach.
From a technical standpoint, the deployment marked a milestone for fifth-generation aviation as pilots recorded the first air-to-air kills achieved by an F-35A against one-way attack drones. This operational success proves the aircraft’s versatility in modern counter-UAS (Unmanned Aircraft Systems) roles, demonstrating that the F-35A can effectively neutralize low-cost aerial threats while maintaining its primary strike capabilities.
