The incident occurred last Friday when a Russian Il-20 electronic intelligence aircraft was detected flying in international airspace without a filed flight plan. According to the Polish Operational Command of the Armed Forces, the Russian crew had their transponder deactivated, making the plane invisible to civilian air traffic control. While the aircraft did not violate Polish sovereign airspace, the deployment of the MiG-29 interceptors was deemed necessary as this marked the ninth such reconnaissance mission by Russian forces in the region so far this year.
Operationally, the intercept serves as a critical demonstration of NATO’s air shielding capabilities. By visually identifying and escorting the non-compliant aircraft, Polish pilots maintained the safety of regional flight corridors and gathered intelligence on the intruder’s movements. “Thanks to the high state of readiness of the units on duty, the experience of the pilots, and the effective functioning of the air defense system, the mission was carried out quickly, professionally, and safely,” stated the Polish Operational Command in an official release.
