Aviation News – GKN Aerospace has delivered the first upgraded RM12EP engine to the Swedish Armed Forces, marking a key milestone in enhancing the performance and longevity of Sweden’s JAS 39 Gripen C/D fighter fleet.
The delivery is part of a SEK 400 million ($43 million) modernization program aimed at improving the operational capability and long-term supportability of existing RM12 engines. The RM12EP program, launched in 2019, advanced significantly in October 2023 when Sweden’s Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) awarded the final development phase contract to GKN Aerospace, Saab, and GE Aerospace, bringing together key industry players to upgrade the legacy propulsion system.
The upgraded RM12EP engine introduces enhanced performance features designed to improve reliability, efficiency, and maintainability. These improvements are expected to extend engine life cycles while ensuring the Gripen C/D fleet remains operationally relevant, supporting Sweden’s air defense readiness with improved thrust performance and reduced maintenance demands.
