Aviation News – ADAC Luftrettung, one of Europe’s largest helicopter emergency medical services (HEMS) providers, has signed a strategic long-term framework contract with Airbus Helicopters for H135, H140, and H145 aircraft. This major agreement secures the future of German air rescue by integrating versatile, state-of-the-art flight technology into a fleet that performs tens of thousands of life-saving missions annually.
The contract solidifies an initial agreement reached at last year’s Verticon, where ADAC Luftrettung was named as a launch customer and development partner for the innovative H140 helicopter. Currently operating a fleet of 60 Airbus helicopters across 37 stations, the non-profit organization is a pioneer in the European rescue sector. In 2025 alone, their crews responded to approximately 50,000 missions, highlighting the critical need for a reliable and modern fleet.
By diversifying its aircraft lineup, ADAC Luftrettung aims to match specific operational requirements with the most suitable helicopter types. The partnership between these two industry leaders spans decades and focuses on maintaining the highest possible standards for patient and flight safety. This development context is particularly relevant as the HEMS sector moves toward more sustainable operations and enhanced night-flight capabilities.
Technically, the fleet expansion introduces the H140, a new 3-tonne class rotorcraft designed to provide maximum versatility and cost efficiency. The inclusion of the H135 and H145 ensures that crews have access to quiet, high-performance tools equipped for around-the-clock operations, including missions in total darkness. These aircraft are engineered for lower fuel consumption, which reduces the environmental impact while increasing the operational range for critical care transport.
