Embraer has officially delivered the first two A-29 Super Tucano aircraft to the Uruguayan Air Force (FAU), marking the start of a major fleet renewal program designed to bolster national sovereignty. These multi-mission aircraft will play a critical role in enhancing Uruguay’s border protection and airspace control capabilities.
The delivery follows a strategic contract signed in late 2024, which includes not only the aircraft but also comprehensive integrated logistics, mission equipment, and a flight simulator. This acquisition continues a long-standing partnership; Uruguay was the first international customer for Embraer over five decades ago. The transition to the A-29 replaces aging platforms, providing the FAU with a modern combat fleet capable of meeting 21st-century security challenges.
The A-29 Super Tucano is a versatile platform engineered for high-performance in diverse environments, including the ability to operate from unpaved runways with minimal infrastructure. Beyond its role in advanced pilot training, the aircraft excels in intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR), air interdiction, and even modern counter-drone operations. Its robust airframe and low life-cycle costs make it a highly efficient solution for air forces requiring high operational availability.
“This historic milestone positions Uruguay in the region with an aircraft that operates in 22 air forces in the world, with advanced technology and adequate operating cost,” stated Air General Fernando Colina, Commander in Chief of the Uruguayan Air Force. “With the arrival of the Super Tucanos, Uruguay obtains a great tool to recover and expand capabilities to guard our airspace.”
The integration of the Super Tucano signals a new technological horizon for Uruguay’s military, shifting the FAU toward a more digitally integrated and responsive defense posture. As the aircraft are deployed for air patrol and defense missions, Uruguay joins a global community of users who have collectively surpassed 600,000 flight hours with this platform.
The arrival of these first two units is just the beginning of a transformed Uruguayan Air Force. By adopting this proven weapon system, the nation ensures a more secure environment for its citizens while maintaining a cost-effective and highly capable air defense system for years to come.
