AviationNews – The United States Secret Service (USSS) has officially inducted a retired VH-3D Marine One helicopter into its elite training fleet, following a formal dedication ceremony held on January 12, 2026. This historic aircraft, which served nine American presidents, will now provide special agents with an authentic platform for high-stakes tactical training at the James J. Rowley Training Center (JJRTC).
The delivery and installation of the helicopter, known by its bureau number BUNO 159351, was the culmination of a multi-year partnership between the USSS and the Presidential Helicopters Program Office (PMA-274). Originally commissioned in 1975, the aircraft was decommissioned in late 2024 after nearly five decades of service with the Marine Helicopter Squadron One (HMX-1). Before its final arrival in Maryland, the helicopter underwent extensive refurbishment and demilitarization to ensure it was “mission-ready” for its new educational role.
Operational and technical realism are at the heart of this upgrade, as the VH-3D features a seating configuration that mirrors the VH-92A Patriot, the newest model in the presidential lift mission. Located just feet away from a mock presidential jetliner known as “Air Force One Half,” the helicopter allows trainees to practice the complex choreography of protecting the POTUS and VPOTUS during critical transitions between aircraft. The authentic interior layout enables agents to run realistic threat reaction drills and tactical procedures that were impossible to replicate in the deteriorating Navy asset it replaced.
“This aircraft served nearly 50 years, supporting nine U.S. Presidents throughout its distinguished history,” stated Col. Erica Mantz, PMA-274 Program Manager, during the dedication. “Now, 351 will continue to serve our great nation in a different, but equally important capacity, strengthening our partnership with the Secret Service to ensure the safety of our country’s leaders.”
Looking ahead, the integration of BUNO 351 into the JJRTC curriculum marks a vital step in modernizing the Secret Service’s protective training infrastructure as the agency prepares for peak trainee levels in 2026. This “white-glove” asset ensures that the next generation of special agents is prepared for the unique physical and tactical demands of the presidential detail.
In conclusion, the transition of this venerable VH-3D from active duty to a specialized trainer preserves a piece of American history while enhancing national security. By providing an unmatched level of technical accuracy, the aircraft ensures that the Secret Service remains at the cutting edge of protective excellence for years to come.
