Aviation News – India has approved the acquisition of six pre-owned Boeing 767 aircraft to be converted into aerial refuellers, addressing availability problems with its ageing tanker fleet. The decision strengthens the Indian Air Force’s ability to sustain long-range and high-tempo air operations.
The Indian Ministry of Defence has granted an Acceptance of Necessity for the programme, clearing the way for the purchase of six Boeing 767 airliners. Israel Aerospace Industries has been selected to carry out the conversions, replacing the role of the Indian Air Force’s Russian-built Il-78MKI tankers, which have faced persistent serviceability challenges.
Once modified, the aircraft will be equipped with refuelling systems that allow fighters and other aircraft to receive fuel in flight, extending range and endurance. The conversion bolt will integrate modern avionics, refuelling booms, and mission systems, offering improved reliability and lower operating costs compared with older platforms.
