Aviation News – The U.S. Air Force has formally inactivated the 40th Flight Test Squadron’s Detachment 1 at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, marking a major step in the A-10’s retirement.
The move, announced on Dec. 5, 2025, reflects the service’s ongoing plan to draw down the A-10 fleet and shift resources toward next-generation capabilities. Detachment 1, a geographically separated element of the 40th Flight Test Squadron, was responsible for executing developmental test operations for the A-10.
The A-10 Thunderbolt II—long valued for its close air support role—is being phased out as the Air Force pivots to platforms better suited for contested environments. Detachment 1 played a critical role in validating upgrades, evaluating flight performance, and ensuring the aircraft remained operationally effective during its final modernization cycles.
Although developmental testing for the Warthog has ended, officials emphasized the unit’s legacy of innovation. “Detachment 1’s work ensured the A-10 remained a trusted asset for aircrews and commanders worldwide,” an Air Force spokesperson said. “Its contributions helped the aircraft deliver decades of unmatched support to U.S. and allied forces.”
