Aviation News – Japan’s Ministry of Defense has confirmed that a fighter squadron at Chitose Air Base in Hokkaido will transition from the F-15J to the F-35A, underscoring the country’s continued shift toward fifth-generation airpower.

The move adds Chitose to Japan’s growing F-35A footprint, following earlier squadron assignments at Misawa and Komatsu air bases. Three squadrons are already operating the aircraft across those sites, with plans for two squadrons ultimately stationed at each base. The decision marks another step in Japan’s long-term modernization strategy as regional security demands increase.

The F-35A Lightning II offers advanced stealth, sensor fusion and networking capabilities that exceed the performance envelope of the F-15J. Its ability to share real-time data across platforms enhances situational awareness and strengthens Japan’s integrated air-defence posture.

“This transition represents a significant investment in Japan’s future air-defence capability,” the Ministry of Defense said. “The F-35A will provide our forces with improved survivability, advanced sensors and the operational flexibility required to meet emerging security challenges.”

The rollout at Chitose is expected to pave the way for broader deployment across Japan’s northern air-defence network. Training, infrastructure upgrades and phased aircraft deliveries will follow as the new squadron prepares for full operational capability.

As Japan accelerates its fighter-modernization plans, the F-35A is positioned to play a central role in national defence for decades. The transition at Chitose further strengthens the country’s air-combat readiness and reinforces its deterrence posture in the region.
