Europe Moves to Resolve Impasse on Next-Generation Fighter Jet Program

FCAS

Aviation News – Germany, France and Spain will seek to end a long-running stalemate this week over Europe’s next-generation fighter jet program, a project considered crucial amid heightened security concerns driven by the war in Ukraine.

The three nations have been negotiating terms for the ambitious Future Combat Air System (FCAS), a development effort valued at up to €100 billion. The program, jointly led by European industry partners, has faced delays over workshare arrangements and technology responsibilities since its initial selection several years ago.

Designed as a cornerstone of Europe’s future air-defense strategy, the FCAS includes a sixth-generation fighter jet working in concert with drones, advanced sensors and AI-enabled systems. Once operational, it is expected to significantly enhance the continent’s aerial capabilities and reduce reliance on non-European platforms.
