Aviation News – Thailand marks major step toward advanced air mobility
Thailand has completed a landmark urban air mobility demonstration in Bangkok, where the nation’s aviation chief became the first regulator worldwide to ride in a pilotless passenger eVTOL aircraft. The event highlights growing momentum for integrating autonomous air taxis into city transport networks.
The flight was organized by EHang in cooperation with the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT) and local partners under the country’s AAM Sandbox Initiative. During the demonstration, held as part of Thailand’s ongoing efforts to evaluate advanced air mobility technologies, CAAT Director General Air Chief Marshal Manat Chavanaprayoon boarded the EH216-S, marking a significant milestone in the company’s global commercialization strategy.
The two-seat EH216-S operates autonomously, using pre-programmed routes and advanced flight control systems to navigate urban airspace. Designed for short-range city trips, the aircraft aims to reduce congestion, cut emissions, and offer a new mode of rapid point-to-point transport.
“This demonstration represents a pivotal moment for Thailand’s AAM development and reflects our commitment to exploring safe and innovative aviation solutions,” CAAT leadership stated following the event.
Thailand plans further evaluations as it advances toward regulatory frameworks for passenger-carrying eVTOL operations. The Bangkok flight is expected to accelerate public awareness, governmental support, and commercial interest in autonomous air mobility services.
The successful test marks a major step for EHang and Thailand, showcasing a future in which pilotless air taxis may become part of everyday urban travel. More trials and regulatory progress are anticipated as the region positions itself as a leader in next-generation aviation.
