Aviation News – Austria signs major procurement deal for advanced trainer and light-attack jets
Austria has officially signed a contract to purchase 12 Leonardo M-346FA Master aircraft, marking a significant modernization step for the nation’s air fleet and strengthening its light-combat and training capabilities.
The deal concludes months of evaluation and follows Austria’s decision to select the M-346FA earlier this year as its next-generation platform for pilot training and tactical operations. The agreement involves the Austrian government and Italy’s Leonardo, aligning with broader European defense cooperation efforts.
Designed as both an advanced jet trainer and a multi-role light-attack aircraft, the M-346FA can carry modern targeting systems, precision-guided munitions, and electronic-warfare equipment. The acquisition is expected to enhance Austria’s readiness and streamline pilot development by replacing aging systems with a more versatile platform.
A spokesperson for Austria’s Ministry of Defence said, “The M-346FA provides the right balance of performance, training potential, and operational flexibility, enabling us to prepare pilots for future missions while reinforcing national and European security.”
The first aircraft deliveries are expected to begin within the next few years, with operational integration and training programs set to follow. Austria’s decision is seen as part of a broader trend among mid-sized European air forces seeking cost-effective yet capable aircraft.
