Spain’s Most Advanced Secure Communications Satellite, SpainSat NG-II, Successfully Launched from the U.S.

Airbus completes Spain’s largest-ever space project with successful SpainSat NG-II launch

Airbus successfully launched SpainSat NG-II, the second and final satellite in Spain’s new-generation secure communications system, marking a milestone in European defence connectivity. The launch took place from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, completing Spain’s most ambitious space programme to date.

The SpainSat NG programme, developed for Spain’s Ministry of Defence and operated by Hisdesat, establishes Europe’s most advanced secure government communications network. With the first satellite, SpainSat NG-I, launched in January 2025, this second satellite’s deployment finalizes the dual-satellite constellation that will begin operations in spring 2026. The system will support the Spanish Armed Forces, the European Commission’s GOVSATCOM initiative, NATO, and allied governments.

The SpainSat NG-II satellite was integrated, tested, and validated at Airbus facilities in Toulouse before being shipped to Florida in September. Launched aboard a Falcon 9 rocket, it will provide highly secure, anti-jamming communications to ensure reliable connectivity for critical defence and governmental missions across Europe and beyond.

“SpainSat NG-II represents a major step forward in secure satellite communications and demonstrates Spain’s leadership in European defence technology,” said a spokesperson from Airbus. “Together with Hisdesat, we are delivering a cutting-edge capability that strengthens Europe’s strategic autonomy in space.”

With both satellites now in orbit, Spain’s defence and security network is set to gain unmatched resilience and operational flexibility. The system’s launch positions Spain and Europe at the forefront of secure satellite communications for decades to come.

The successful completion of the SpainSat NG programme highlights Airbus’s growing role in Europe’s space infrastructure and reinforces Spain’s strategic capabilities in global defence communications.
