New Research Uncovers Hidden Health Risks for Frequent Fliers

Aviation News – While flying remains the safest mode of transport, scientists are discovering increasing health risks tied to the commercial flight environment, presenting particular dangers to those who fly often, such as aircrew and frequent business travelers.

Researchers, including those from Harvard, are focusing on less visible threats that exist at cruising altitude. Statistically, an individual faces a much greater chance of injury or death in a car crash. However, two primary factors—cosmic radiation and low cabin pressure—pose subtle, cumulative threats to regular passengers and flight staff.

The Earth’s atmosphere typically provides protection from space-based radiation, but at cruising altitudes, this shield weakens. A single round trip from the Netherlands to Australia exposes a passenger to about one-fifth of the annual safe limit for cosmic radiation. This exposure is clinically relevant: pilots and flight attendants face double the average risk of skin cancer, and female cabin crew experience a fifty per cent higher risk of breast cancer.

The lower air pressure inside the cabin, equivalent to an altitude of 2,000 meters, causes the blood’s oxygen level to drop, typically from 97 to 93 per cent in healthy individuals. This forces the heart to work harder to compensate. The effect is dramatically intensified by alcohol, with sleeping drinkers seeing their blood oxygen levels plunge to an average of 85 per cent while their heart rate dangerously accelerates.

A key finding is the direct impact on cardiovascular health. Chamber research showed that for individuals over 50, the lower oxygen levels increase the risk of heart arrhythmias and cause the heart to beat faster.

For the average holiday traveler, flying remains entirely safe and the health risks are negligible. Nevertheless, individuals who view the airplane as a “second home”—pilots, cabin crew, and corporate frequent fliers—must monitor their exposure and health proactively, particularly regarding radiation and cardiac stress.
