Aviation News – U.S. Special Operations Command (SOCOM) has chosen Northrop Grumman’s APG-83 Scalable Agile Beam Radar (SABR) to replace legacy radar systems on AC-130J, MC-130J, and HC-130J aircraft, enhancing mission effectiveness and survivability.
The selection underscores SOCOM’s push to modernize its specialized C-130J fleet with advanced sensor technology. The APG-83, already fielded on fighter aircraft like the F-16, brings active electronically scanned array (AESA) capabilities to the gunship, tanker, and rescue variants of the Hercules.
Key benefits of the upgrade include:
-
Enhanced situational awareness in all weather conditions
-
Improved target detection and tracking capabilities
-
Greater resistance to electronic warfare threats
-
Increased reliability and reduced maintenance needs
The APG-83 SABR uses advanced beam-shaping and rapid scanning to deliver precise imaging and tracking, significantly improving operational capability compared to mechanically scanned radars. This allows crews to detect, identify, and engage threats more effectively in contested environments.
“This radar upgrade equips our crews with the most advanced sensing technology available, ensuring dominance in the most demanding missions,” a SOCOM spokesperson said.
The modernization effort reflects SOCOM’s commitment to maintaining technological superiority across its airborne platforms. Future integration of the APG-83 may pave the way for improved interoperability and mission data sharing across the joint force.
By fielding the SABR system, SOCOM ensures its C-130J aircraft remain capable and combat-relevant for decades to come, bridging today’s operational needs with tomorrow’s challenges.
