The F-35’s external night vision camera provides pilots with unparalleled visibility in low-light environments, and ongoing improvements are enhancing its capabilities.
Nighttime Game-Changer
The F-35 Lightning II’s external night vision camera is a game-changer for pilots, providing them with a clear view of their surroundings even in the darkest environments.
This advanced camera seamlessly streams footage to the Helmet Mounted Display System (HMDS), giving pilots unmatched night vision capabilities. The HMDS displays the camera’s feed on the pilot’s visor, allowing them to navigate and engage targets with ease, even in complete darkness.
Constantly Improving
We’re working directly with Marine Operational Test and Evaluation Squadron 1, also known as VMX-1, to further improve the external night vision camera’s capabilities. VMX-1 is an elite squadron based at Marine Corps Air Station Yuma, where they conduct operational testing and evaluation of new aircraft and systems to ensure they meet the Marine Corps’ rigorous standards.
As part of this collaboration, Lockheed Martin and VMX-1 are conducting tests to enhance the camera’s overall performance. This combined team effort will enable F-35 pilots to operate even more effectively in low-light environments, giving them a critical edge in combat situations.
The key takeaway? We’re ensuring that the F-35 remains the most advanced and capable fighter jet in the world.
