Summer Special 2: NATO Tigermeet

This summer we will do some short articles about airshows, fly-ins, events, museums, military exercises under the title Summer Special.

The hosting nation and specific airbase for Tigermeet vary each year. And this year host will be the German Air force TaktLwG 51/1 at Schleswig Air Base from 3 June 2024 – 13 Junne 2024.

Tigermeet, also known as NATO Tiger Meet (NTM), is a significant military exercise involving NATO’s air forces. The event is known for its emphasis on fostering camaraderie and cooperation among NATO member states and their air forces. Here are some key aspects of Tigermeet:

Historical Background

  • Inception: The first Tigermeet took place in 1961. It was initiated by the 79th Tactical Fighter Squadron of the United States Air Force, the French 1/12 Cambresis squadron, and the UK’s 74 Squadron.
  • Symbolism: The “tiger” theme stems from the tradition that participating squadrons often have tiger emblems or motifs, symbolizing strength, agility, and fierceness.

Highlights

  • Tiger Aircraft: One of the unique traditions of Tigermeet is the custom painting of aircraft in tiger stripes and other tiger-themed artwork.
  • Social Events: By the end of the first OPS week it is time to tighten social strengths between all participating units. It is during these days that the well-known Tiger Games are executed. Tiger Games are mainly a mix of fun and sports
