Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is the main international airport of the Netherlands. It is located 9 kilometres (5.6 miles) southwest of Amsterdam.
The airport is built on the single-terminal concept: one large terminal split into three large departure halls.
Schiphol has six runways, one of which is used mainly by general aviation. AMS covers a total area of 6,887 acres (2,787 ha) of land. Newest runway (Polderbaan), opened in 2003, with own control tower.
It is located far from the terminal to reduce the noise impact on the surrounding population. Takeoffs only northbound and landings only southbound. The nearest end is located 5 km (3.1 mi) from the terminal building, and aircraft have a lengthy 15-minute taxi to and from the terminal.
Schiphol Airport ranked as Europe’s third busiest and the world’s eleventh busiest by total passenger traffic. A record 71,706,999 passengers passed through the airport in 2019. Schiphol is the hub for KLM and its regional affiliate KLM Cityhopper as well as for Corendon Dutch Airlines, Martinair, Transavia and TUI fly Netherlands. The airport also serves as a base for EasyJet.
