Amsterdam – Schiphol cancels flights this summer too, travel industry wants to go to court

To prevent another crowding infestation, Amsterdam – Schiphol is forcing airlines to scrap “seats,” how many, will be determined on a daily basis. On the busiest days in July, this leaves an average of 13,500 travelers grounded per day.

Schiphol is limiting the daily number of passengers using the airport in July and August. In July, a maximum of 67,500 passengers are allowed to depart daily, while in August the number is 72,500. The measure is necessary because of the security staff shortage at Amsterdam – Schiphol.

Especially between July 7 and 31, many travelers are affected by the measure. The airport has to turn away up to 13,500 passengers per day during that period. Amsterdam – Schiphol will announce within two weeks how many passengers will be denied access to the airport in August.

Now that not enough flights have been voluntarily surrendered, the airport will enforce the cancellation of flights through a so-called local rule, where all airlines surrender flights proportionately. This means that major users KLM, Transavia and Easyjet will have to give up most flights.
