In the last few weeks United and EVA Air announced an early retirement for their Boeing 747 ‘s. This confirms the trend of Boeing’s Iconic JumboJet disappearing from the scene in a rapid pace.
Research of Routesonline and OAG shows that the 747 capacity has dropped by two thirds in the last 10 years from 120 million seats in 2007 to just over 40 million in 2016.
747 ‘s are being replaced by Boeing 777’s, 787’s and Airbus A350’s. These twin engine aircraft are much more fuel efficient and cheaper in maintenance.
Boeing has a replacement for the old 747 ‘s, the 747 -8 but sales are disappointing and only the freighter keeps production lines open.
Lufthansa, British Airways, Korean Air and KLM are the biggest users in seat capacity of the Boeing 747.
