Residents in Cardiff, Newport and the surrounding areas are being warned that there is likely to be a significant increase in air activity during the NATO Summit at Celtic Manor, Newport on the 4-5 September.
Training by the RAF has been in progress ahead of the Summit to prepare for all possible security contingencies. A spokesman for the RAF said: “As we carry out this essential training and security role there will be a visible and audible presence of RAF Typhoon jets and other aircraft operating above Cardiff, Newport and the surrounding areas to allow pilots and other forces to become familiar with operating in the airspace surrounding the Summit venue.
“We have sought to limit the amount of flying to the minimum required to ensure that our forces are ready for their important role delivering air security for the NATO Summit, balancing this against the need for us to reduce disturbance to a minimum. We hope that people will understand the need for this and we thank them for their continued strong support.
“Whilst there is no specific threat to the Summit, we have to be ready to assist in delivering a safe and secure event. This underlines the commitment of the Ministry of Defence and the RAF to keeping the public safe at a time when the world will be watching us.”
