EUROCONTROL has just released an update of military statistics, covering the size and type of State aircraft fleet in both Europe and the U.S. This update gives the numbers and characteristics of State aircraft GAT (general air traffic) flights in European airspace and their relative impact on the ATM network, compared with civil GAT flights in the same area. Data on operational air traffic (OAT) is also included.
Member States provided these data and their input is key in giving a comprehensive picture of State aircraft usage of airspace and its impact on the ATM network. This overview will also help readers assess the potential consequences of ATM regulations – such as the Single European Sky one – on State aircraft users in terms of access to airspace, avionics requirements and navigation performance requirements.
The update provides an analysis of trends identified for State aircraft and ATM; it shows the steady decrease in military fleets and number of GAT flights, OAT flights as percentage of total number of flights, GAT flights per State aircraft types, etc.
First produced in 2004, the military statistics update has become an important reference for ATM planners and experts dealing with civil-military issues.
