Solar Impulse en route to Paris-Le Bourget

Solar Impulse with pilot André Borschberg  took off at 6:36pm LT Saturday June 11  from Brussels Airport Zaventem to Paris Airport Le Bourget for the 49th Paris Air Show.
The Solar Impulse was crossing the Belgium/France border at 9:24pm, ETA at Le Bourget 02:00am LT on Sunday June 12.

Solar Impulse has a wingspan of more than 206 feet (63 meters) — the same as an Airbus A340 — and is nearly 72 feet (22 meters) long. It weighs about 3,500 pounds (1,600 kilograms) and has nearly 12,000 solar cells attached to its wings and horizontal stabilizers.

The plane is equipped with four electric engines and has a top speed of about 43 miles (70 kilometers) per hour.

The Paris Air Show though has scooped the first public appearance and flying display by the Solar Impulse solar-powered aircraft as its ‘special guest’. Its .appearance at Le Bourget will be the first time the prototype, currently working up to a series of record-breaking flights, will make a public airshow appearance outside home country of Switzerland. The organisers say that the Solar Impulse is planned to make a 10-15min flight every day (bar one), weather conditions permitting.

It made its first flight in April 2010, and its first night flight in July that year. The team hope to make a round-the-world flight in 2014.
