M-346 background
The Alenia Aermacchi M-346 Master is the most Advanced/Lead-In Fighter Trainer currently produced and the only new generation trainer optimised to train pilots to fly new generation combat aircraft, such as F-16, Eurofighter, Gripen, Rafale, F-18, F-22 and the future JSF. Its excellent performance and flying qualities, close to modern frontline fighters, brings the M-346 to a superior teaching effectiveness level. The advanced design solutions provide also high safety standards and reduced acquisition and operational costs. The M-346 is the ideal platform for the next generation Integrated Training Systems, ready to meet the most sophisticated Air Forces’ demanding requirements. The M-346 was conceived to provide a flexible service with an excellent cost – efficiency ratio.

The Italian Air Force signed in November 2009 the contract about the first batch of the M-346 trainers and the related flight simulators (total contract foresees 15 aircraft). The first two aircraft will be ready at the end of 2010. In February 2009 the M-346 was selected by the United Arab Emirates for their new training air fleet and the negotiations are at the last stage for the acquisition of a complete Integrated Training Solution comprehensive of 48 M-346, of which twenty in light attack version. Furthermore, it is also in the short list (two competitors) in Singapore within the Fighter Wings Course (FWC), which is aimed to replace the current fleet of advanced trainers.
Alenia Aermacchi recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with EADS Defence and Security (DS) regarding their collaboration to supply an integrated training system based on the M 346 Master advanced trainer aircraft which meets the specific requirements of the nine European countries participating in the Advanced European Jet Pilot Training programme (AEJPT).
