Aviation News – Lockheed Martin has delivered a C-130J-30 Super Hercules aircraft to the U.S. Navy, marking the beginning of a new era for the nation’s airborne nuclear command-and-control operations.

The defense giant handed over the long-fuselage transport aircraft at its Marietta, Georgia, facility on Oct. 15. Once modified, the aircraft will become the E-130J Phoenix II, serving as the primary platform for the U.S. Navy’s critical Take Charge and Move Out (TACAMO) mission. The TACAMO mission provides vital airborne strategic communications between national command authorities and the military’s strategic submarine forces.

The selection of the domestically produced C-130J-30 Super Hercules expands the operational portfolio of the flight-proven, four-engine airframe. Built to support demanding strategic roles, the aircraft offers essential structural endurance and reliability needed to maintain continuous airborne readiness during high-stakes national defense operations.

Engineers designed the C-130J-30 to offer expanded payload capacity, improved fuel efficiency, greater operational range, and advanced avionics. These high-performance upgrades provide the superior range, system integration capabilities, and extended loiter endurance required to execute uninterrupted airborne communications in complex operational environments.

“The Super Hercules provides the Navy with a domestically produced, reliable, long-endurance, four-engine platform with the proven performance to successfully carry out the TACAMO mission,” declared Lockheed Martin in an official statement detailing the milestone.

As defense threats evolve globally, transitioning to the E-130J Phoenix II platform ensures that the U.S. military maintains secure, uninterrupted strategic communication lines. Aerospace military defense teams will continue modification work to equip the newly delivered Super Hercules airframe with advanced mission systems in the coming months.
