Aviation News – The government of Romania has officially signed a contract to acquire 12 Airbus H225M helicopters to accelerate military readiness and modernize its armed forces. Concluded with the French Armament General Directorate (DGA), the deal marks a major step forward in closing critical European tactical airlift capabilities.

The strategic procurement is framed within the European Commission’s Security Action for Europe (SAFE), a major financial instrument designed to support EU Member States with urgent defense investments. The procurement strengthens a two-decade Airbus presence in Romania, where the aerospace company provides engineering, secure communications, and parts manufacturing alongside a dedicated customer support center. Furthermore, the acquisition bolsters domestic defense manufacturing through Airbus Helicopters’ long-term industrial partnership with IAR, Romania’s sole helicopter manufacturer.

The fleet of 12 H225M aircraft will initiate the gradual replacement of the Romanian Air Force’s aging IAR-330 Puma fleet, which has served under a license from Aerospatiale. This agreement complements Romania’s broader military modernization trajectory, following previous orders for two H215M helicopters delivered in naval configuration.

Designed for heavy-lift versatility, the H225M platform will support both conventional and special operations under demanding multi-domain mission conditions. Its advanced avionics, long flight endurance, and combat-proven reliability significantly improve overall fleet readiness and operational safety across Eastern European theater maneuvers.

“We are honoured that Romania has chosen the H225M to strengthen its defence capabilities, which will also bolster Romania’s industrial capabilities through our long term partnership with IAR,” stated Matthieu Louvot, CEO of Airbus Helicopters. “We are proud to welcome Romania within the growing H225M community, establishing the H225M as a key asset of Europe’s defence.”

The integration of these modern rotorcraft secures a high degree of interoperability with international partners while deepening regional security cooperation. Over the coming years, local manufacturing and maintenance programs will drive technical growth and high-skilled industrial jobs across the nation’s defense sector.

The strategic contract ensures the Romanian Air Force transitions smoothly into next-generation rotary-wing technology. By replacing legacy Puma aircraft, Romania cements its role as a key contributor to collective regional security. Continued industrial collaboration with IAR guarantees long-term operational support for the entire fleet.
