Aviation News – Cape Air has selected the Cessna Grand Caravan EX to replace its twin-engine Tecnam P2012 Traveller fleet in Montana, marking a significant strategic pivot in its regional short-haul flight network. The decision strengthens dispatch reliability and increases overall cargo capacity for vital Essential Air Service routes connecting remote rural communities.
Cape Air announced the regional fleet transformation following an evaluation of its operational requirements in Eastern Montana. The regional airline initially introduced the Italian-built Tecnam P2012 to modernize its aging fleet, but operating conditions and maintenance considerations in the rugged rural sector prompted the carrier to reassess its long-term equipment strategy. Under the transition schedule, Cape Air plans to begin integrating the single-engine turboprops in 2027, fully phasing out the Tecnam P2012 across its Montana routes by the end of that year.
The upcoming shift affects regional connections linking Billings Logan International Airport to five key regional destinations: Havre, Glasgow, Glendive, Sidney, and Wolf Point. The transition relies on a federal regulatory waiver granted by the U.S. Department of Transportation, allowing single-engine operations on designated subsidized passenger routes typically requiring multi-engine aircraft. Cape Air will continue utilizing its twin-engine fleet across its established routes in the Northeast and the Caribbean while dedicating the new turboprop fleet to the Big Sky Country.
The incoming Cessna Grand Caravan EX features a high-wing design powered by an 867-horsepower Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A-140 turboprop engine. Equipped with a specialized belly cargo pod, the aircraft delivers expanded storage capacity designed specifically for bulky passenger luggage, sporting goods, and essential regional freight. This utility configuration enhances operational efficiency while maintaining reliable flight schedules through adverse weather and challenging airfield conditions.
