Aviation News – Ukraine could sign a deal within months to purchase Saab Gripen fighter jets from Sweden, according to the country’s defence minister during a visit to Stockholm on Thursday. The potential agreement marks another major step in strengthening Ukraine’s air combat capabilities amid the ongoing war with Russia.

Ukraine and Sweden signed a letter of intent in 2025 that opened the door for Stockholm to supply up to 150 Gripen fighter aircraft to Kyiv. The discussions come as Ukraine continues to modernize its air force with Western-built platforms following earlier deliveries of F-16 fighter jets from allied nations. The possible acquisition would represent one of the largest defence cooperation agreements between the two countries.

The Gripen fighter jet, developed by Swedish aerospace company Saab, is designed for rapid deployment, advanced air defence missions, and operations from short or damaged runways. Analysts say the aircraft’s relatively low operating costs, electronic warfare capabilities, and ease of maintenance could make it highly effective for Ukraine’s wartime requirements. The aircraft is also compatible with a wide range of NATO-standard weapons systems.

Ukraine’s defence minister said the talks with Sweden were progressing positively and highlighted the importance of deepening military cooperation with European partners. Swedish officials have previously stated that closer defence collaboration with Ukraine would strengthen regional security and support Kyiv’s long-term defence strategy.
