China Puts J-35A Stealth Fighter Into Service, Becoming Only the Second Nation with Dual Stealth Jets

Aviation News – July 7, 2025 – In a major milestone for its air power ambitions, China has officially inducted the J-35A, a fifth-generation stealth fighter, into operational service with the People’s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF). This development makes China the only country besides the United States to field two different stealth fighter platforms—joining the already-operational J-20 Mighty Dragon.

The J-35A, also referred to as the FC-31, is a carrier-capable stealth fighter designed to bolster both naval and land-based air operations. The induction was confirmed through a series of credible leaks and photos shared by defense analysts, showing the aircraft with operational markings at a Chinese airbase.

Advanced Capabilities and Strategic Role

Originally developed by Shenyang Aircraft Corporation, the J-35A features low radar cross-section, internal weapons bays, and advanced avionics—offering performance comparable to the U.S. F-35 Lightning II. While the J-20 serves more of an air superiority and interceptor role, the J-35A is expected to provide carrier-based stealth strike capabilities, enhancing China’s blue-water naval power projection.

China’s newest aircraft carriers, including the Fujian (Type 003), are expected to eventually deploy the J-35A, giving the Chinese navy a true fifth-generation aviation wing.

A Strategic Power Play

The induction of the J-35A comes amid rising regional tensions, particularly in the South China Sea and Taiwan Strait, where air dominance and rapid deployment capabilities are crucial. By fielding two operational stealth aircraft, China increases its air combat flexibility, deterrent posture, and tactical redundancy in a modern conflict scenario.

Military experts also note that this move signals significant progress in China’s aerospace industry, with the country now moving closer to parity with Western military aviation capabilities.
