GKN stand debuts Electronically Dimmable Window System at MRO Europe

GKN Aerospace’s business unit Fokker, introduces today at MRO Europe, a new Electronically Dimmable Window system called “Element EDW”. This smart transparency replaces the current window shades and improves passenger comfort substantially by managing daylight, heat and noise coming through aircraft cabin windows. Element EDW is developed in collaboration with InspecTech Aero Service and based on SPD-Smart dimmable window technology.

Designed for both single aisle aircraft and wide body aircraft, the commercial airline aftermarket is the key market for Element EDW. Fokker will offer the product as a modkit, containing the material to modify the aircraft, combined with installation instructions. Installation support or MRO capacity can also be provided. First delivery is planned in the third quarter of 2017. Fokker will showcase the Element EDW as part of the GKN Stand (booth # 12 – 411) at MRO Europe in Amsterdam.
Element EDW improves the cabin atmosphere by controlling outside elements coming through windows on multiple levels. Daylight can be controlled by electronically dimming the light coming into the windows. Heat can be kept outside the cabin, by insulation films included in the window, which can significantly reduce operational cost when an aircraft is parked in full sunlight on the ramp. Noise during flights is reduced through the improved acoustic properties of the window compared to traditional windows. Element EDW is the main product in the Element Suite product line of Fokker, representing a full range of products for commercial airlines to enhance passenger comfort.

Erik Geertsema, Vice President at Fokker Services says: “The innovative “Element EDW” is a great example of our capability of turning a novel technology into a viable product, in close collaboration with our partners.”
