The Yakovlev Yak-130 combat trainer is not new to participation in MAKS exhibitions; this time around one of the test aircraft is sporting the manufacturer’s red-and-white house livery. The freshly painted jet (serial 02) landed at Zhukovsky on 24 July, following a ferry flight from the Irkutsk factory with two en-route refueling stops. According to manufacturer Irkut Corporation, the new paint scheme is the only thing that has been changed about the prototype.

Yakovlev first applied the red-and-white scheme to the AIR-2 light biplane, which took off in 1928. The livery featuring horizontal fin stripes was later adopted for the company’s other prototypes, including the UT-2, the Yak-18, and the Yak-52.

The Yak-130’s glass cockpit is supplied by Radioelectronic Technologies Concern. Its fly-by-wire system is capable of emulating the handling characteristics of different contemporary warplanes.

Irkut is building 55 such aircraft for the Russian Air Force. The first 12 airframes were delivered in 2012, another 20 deliveries are planned for this year. Other customers for the type include the air forces of Algeria,
