The MRJ Engine Final Assembly to be managed in Aichi, Japan

NAGOYA, Aichi Prefecture, Japan, August 9, 2012 –  The final assembly and acceptance engine test of the Pratt & Whitney PurePower® PW1200G engines for the Mitsubishi Regional Jet (MRJ) will be performed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) Nagoya Guidance & Propulsion Systems Works located in Komaki, Aichi Prefecture in a production phase. After the final assembly, the PW1200G engines will be transferred to MHI Nagoya Aerospace Systems Works Komaki South Plant located in Toyoyama, Aichi Prefecture. The engines will be installed on the wing at the newly constructed MRJ final assembly line located next to Nagoya Komaki Airport, where the first flight will take place.   The MRJ PurePower® PW1200G engine is developed in the United States but in a production phase, since its final assembly will be conducted by MHI, both engines and the aircraft will be finished in Aichi Prefecture where the headquarters of Mitsubishi Aircraft Corporation is located. MHI has vast experience in engine manufacturing and has been involved the in the Pratt & Whitney PW4000 engine project, International Aero Engines V2500 engine project, and also Rolls-Royce TRENT1000 project. As MHI will be conducting final assemblies of both the airframe and engine, Mitsubishi Aircraft Corporation and MHI will be able to work closely to build a more flexible and more effective production system. The development of the engine at Pratt & Whitney is proceeding smoothly, and PW1200G engine flight test program that commenced on April 30th just completed successfully its first flight test program on June 21st.

“It is such encouraging news that the MRJ engine first flight test program completed successfully and that engine development is running smoothly,” said Hideo Egawa, President, Mitsubishi Aircraft Corporation. “As we will be conducting the engine final assembly here, we are looking ahead toward the mass production of the MRJ as well as conducting flight testing on schedule.”   About MRJ   Mitsubishi Regional Jet is a family of 70~90-seat next-generation aircraft featuring state-of-the-art aerodynamics and Pratt & Whitney’s revolutionary PurePower® engine to drastically reduce fuel consumption, noise, and emissions, while offering top-class operational benefits, an outstanding cabin, and large overhead bins designed for heightened passenger flying comfort.
