An Antonov AN 28 Blue Wing crashed in the Upper Marowijne. It says police spokesman Humphrey Naarden. All eight occupants of the twin-engine aircraft died. The cause is still unknown. Elements of police and firefighters have gone into the area.

The National Coordination Rampenbstrijding, NCCR, is involved in the salvage. The work is hampered by bad weather. It is the second fatal accident for Blue Wing. In April 2008 nineteen were killed near Benzdorp, near the border with French Guyana. It was also an Antonov aircraft. The aircraft made a wrong landing.

In October 2009 an Antonov became damaged during a landing Kwamalasemutu. Four of the eight passengers were injured. Blue Wings is among the handful of companies that still use Antonovs. The company came in 2006 with the list of airlines banned within the EU. Blue Wings aircraft would not have the GPWS-vieligheidssysteem. The measure was repealed in 2007
