Frisian Flag 2010

One of the major exercises of this year is Frisian Flag ( April 12 – 23) at the Royal Netherlands Air Force base Leeuwarden, in the north of  the Netherlands. Participants of 2010 are Germany F-4F Phantom, Norway F-16 and a Dassault Falcon 20ECM, Poland F-16CJ, Sweden JAS39C Gripen, United States F-15C and the Netherlands with F-16AM.

Frisian Flag started in 1992 as DIATIT, in 1993 the name changed in DIAWACS due to AWACS participation, in 1997 it was again changed back to DIATIT, and renamed in 1999 to Frisian Flag.

Frisian Flag main purpose is to train pilots in the complex tactical decision making process during both defensive and offensive operations in realistic scenarios.

On Thursday April 15 was the  mission cancelled  by  vulcanic ash  plume of the Eyjafjallajoekull glacier in Iceland. All aircraft of the morning wave, that were already airborne are re-called and returning to base.
This will not only affect Frisian Flag, but all military and commercial flying in Northern European airspace.
