DUBAI – Lufthansa Technik, the maintenance arm of German airline Lufthansa, on Monday announced a string of maintenance and repair deals with regional airlines as it strengthens its foothold to take advantage of the region’s growing aviation sector.

“We are very sure that we will have other partnerships here too in the future,” August Wilhelm Henningsen, chief executive officer of Lufthansa Technik, told Maktoob Business at the Dubai Airshow, but he did not disclose the value of the deals.

The company, which generates about 15 percent of Lufthansa’s revenue, has teamed up with Oman Air to build a new hangar at Muscat’s airport and maintain the state-owned airline’s fleet of Boeing 737s.

Lufthansa Technik also said it will perform cabin modifications for four Airbus A340s operated by Qatar Airways and provide consulting for a new hangar at Doha airport.

It will also upgrade four first-class cabins for Abu Dhabi-based Etihad Airways, has extended a maintenance contract for Afghanistan’s Safi Airways and will provide engine support for Felix Airways, founded in Yemen in 2008.

Lufthansa Technik, which services a fleet of more than 2,000 aircraft globally, garnered sales of 3.7 billion euros last year. It has 32 subsidiaries in Europe, the United States, Asia and Australia.

“In the Middle East we have to start with one (joint venture or company),” Henningsen said, but did not elaborate.
