DUBAI – Airbus hopes to sell a few corporate planes in the Middle East by December to governments and billionaires not hurt much by the recession, but a senior official at the European plane maker on Thursday did not disclose how many or where.

“We do expect some sales to happen between now and year-end,” Francois Chazelle, vice-president of Airbus executive and private aviation division in the Middle East, told reporters at a news conference.

Saudi Arabia is the biggest market for the company’s corporate and private planes, accounting for 20 of about 160 sold so far worldwide.

The UAE and Qatar follow with 10 planes each.

Chazelle said 2009 is “a bit slower” but sales of corporate jets will recover next year.

Globally the company delivers one executive or private jet a month on average with the Middle East accounting for half of the total order book.

These planes are made to suit a client’s requirements and can have meeting, dining and sleeping areas, accommodating 14 to 100 people.
