DUBAI – The first two Emarati women have earned their wings as pilots at Etihad Airways with the airline transport pilot licence (ATPL), the Abu Dhabi-based carrier said on Monday.

Salma al-Baloushi and Aisha al-Mansouri graduated from flight training alongside nine male colleagues.

“Everyone at Etihad is delighted that Salma and Aisha – our first female cadet pilots – have made history as the first women to graduate from the programme,” Etihad Airways Chief Executive James Hogan said in a statement.

The airline said the cadets started the pilot programme course in September 2007 and now have the rank of second officers.

As second officers, they will undergo further courses that will enable them to fly as co-pilots on the Airbus A320 short-haul fleet.
